Available for staff roles, consulting retainers, and project-based engagements.
I find the story your organization almost didn’t tell.
Ten years inside mission-driven organizations taught me one thing: the most powerful story is almost never the one on the homepage. It’s in the room you almost didn’t walk into.
I walk into it.
Then I write what I find.
Who I Am
I’m Joe Class III, a nonprofit narrative writer, incarnational storyteller, and communications strategist based in Jackson, Missouri. I’ve spent more than a decade inside faith-based and mission-driven organizations, writing the stories that move donors to give, partners to trust, and communities to believe the work is real.
I’ve owned the voice of a global mission organization operating across multiple continents. I’ve kept a narrative alive when the pandemic shut field teams down and there was nothing left to film. I’ve sat inside a NIDA addiction recovery study and watched what resilience actually looks like when it has nowhere to perform.
I also write outside of work, because I can’t not. This blog has published more than 470 posts and draws around 8,000 readers a month. I’m completing a memoir. The writing practice and the mission work aren’t separate lives. They inform each other every day.
The best nonprofit writing describes the burden, transfers the weight, and lets the reader choose to carry it.
What I Do
Narrative Strategy
I help organizations find and own their story — not the mission statement version, but the version that makes a first-time donor renew and a skeptical board member lean forward.
Long-Form Writing
Impact reports, grant narratives, donor communications, essays, case studies. I write the things that require sustained attention and a writer who treats craft as non-negotiable.
Story Interviews & Field Reporting
I go to where the work is happening, talk to the people doing it, and find the true thing inside the complicated thing. Proximity is where the story lives.
Voice Development & Staff Coaching
I help organizations develop a consistent voice and train staff to collect and share stories with care, dignity, and skill.
Who I Work With
Faith-based organizations. Behavioral health and recovery nonprofits. International mission organizations. Community development agencies. Any organization doing hard work in proximity to people — and struggling to tell the world why it matters.
I’m open to staff roles, consulting retainers, and project-based engagements. Structure matters less to me than fit. If your mission is real and your stories are going untold, I want to talk.
“I’ve confused institutional pressure with correction.”
