🧊 THE DAY WE SKIPPED SCHOOL FOR ICE SKATING (and got DESTROYED)

Ground-level perspective looking up at three kids pressed flat against a snowy hillside, trying to "hide" - shot from the car's point of view (Mr. Rick's perspective). Their eyes are wide, faces pressed to the cold ground, winter gear askew.

1977. Burien, Washington. Three 7-year-olds about to make the WORST decision ever.

Picture this: My two best friends and me walking to school like we own the world.

Then I see it. A MASSIVE frozen pond in the empty lot.

“Wouldn’t it be cool if we went down there?”

The ice sparkles like glass. Zero hesitation.

Mark doesn’t even answer. Kid LAUNCHES himself onto that ice like he’s auditioning for the Olympics. “COME ON, JOE!” he screams.

We’re sliding, laughing, having the TIME OF OUR LIVES…

Until we look up.

EVERYONE IS GONE.

School started. We’re SCREWED.

We scramble up the hill when I spot Mr. Rick’s 1977 Ford LTD. Our principal. Sitting there. WATCHING US.

“DUCK!” I yell to Mark.

This kid flops against the hillside thinking he’s INVISIBLE. 😂

Plot twist: We weren’t invisible.

Mr. Rick’s belt + phone calls home = THE DOUBLE WHAMMY OF DOOM

GenX parents didn’t mess around, y’all. Let’s just say I couldn’t sit comfortably for a WEEK.

But here’s what that frozen pond taught me:

Every crazy idea needs a pause button. I became the “What if we get caught?” guy who thinks BEFORE he jumps. Saved my crew from YEARS of trouble.

(Spoiler: They didn’t always listen) 😅

WHO ELSE remembers when:

  • Playing outside wasn’t optional (rain or shine!)
  • Principals carried belts
  • Phone calls home were TERRIFYING
  • Your crew was EVERYTHING

Drop a 🧊 if you were that kid with the “wouldn’t it be cool” ideas!

BONUS: Tell me your WORST “seemed like a good idea” moment below! 👇

P.S. – Mark never learned to look before he leaped. Still haven’t. Some things never change! 😅
