What Do You Do?

When confronted with this question, how do you respond? Do you say I’m a custodian? Or are you an industrial arts technician? Or do you work at Popeye’s, McDonald’s, or Wendy’s? Maybe you are an assembly line worker punching a time clock. Perhaps you work as a roofer, but you dream of being a published author at night. But you can’t find work doing the one thing bringing you joy; telling other people stories.

Creative people and those challenged by the advent of technology in terms of being a job seeker, are plagued by artificial intelligence and those seeking to get better using it. And I often hear the question, can AI put the same artistic energy into a story, giving it all the flair and nuances needed to convey the right message for a client?

In the short term, no, I don’t think so. AI is so new, green in terms of how it functions that it’s not able to keep up with or create in the same way a human being can. That being said, AI CAN and often outperforms those tech geniuses in problem solving. Every problem – correction, every TECH problem can be solved with AI because there are no imaginative elements. It’s either a YES or a NO. A one or a zero, to use a binary expression. And because it’s all bits and bytes, so to speak, it’s a calculation, not an inventive solution.

But try using AI to write a creative story and the result will be a mishmash of what the intelligence believes human beings want. It’s not inspired. It has no heart. No blood. No anima. Nothing that gives life it’s inventive flair.

And I have found more AI content creator jobs out there, specifically to help AI create truly unstructured content and I question whether or not that’s a good idea. Is it good to stop people, specifically those who understand how stories are told, from thinking? From expressing various ideas? To cease generating artistic content of all kinds?

It’s a bad idea. There are now more technical jobs than creative ones, and the field will narrow even further if AI is given the ability to creatively write. Not that it will have the capacity to do so. But should we really give it the chance to interact with creative people, emulating the imaginative, instead of being creative all on it’s own?

So, the next time you are in need of a piece of creative content, look to those who specialize in storytelling and critical thinking because these are the people who’s brains those who are technically saavy are looking to emulate. Why not ask them, instead of futsing around with AI? The next time you ask someone what they do, and their answer is “I’m a storyteller,” don’t discredit their creativity. Instead, take a chance and hire them.

It could be the best story you’ve ever delivered your stakeholders.
